Abroad I’d really like to get back to the Greek island of Naxos. Maybe not totally off the beaten path, but spent a half day on a ferry stopover on a holiday a couple years ago and liked that it was more authentic/less commercial than the more prominent Greek islands but still had Mediterranean beaches, lots of shops, restaurants and history and space to slow down.
On the same trip when we were in Athens we stayed in a suburb called Nea Smyrni. Stay somewhere high enough up and you still get an Acropolis view and you’re a pretty simple ~20 min train ride from getting there to do the extra touristy stuff. The area we stayed was extra fun with a pretty neat and modern walkable outdoor town square sort of setup with restaurants et all where you get to see something that feels a little more authentically Greece (waiter in a restaurant would ask us what we were doing all the way out there )
In Canada, if you have a few hikes in you I’d recommend a few days on Vancouver Island’s Southwest coast North of Sooke if you like a little less developed, raw nature. Doesn’t get the buzz of a Tofino, but some pretty majestic rain forest hikes to some cool beaches (Mystic Beach was named one of the best in the world not long ago). Some massive trees up at Port Renfrew especially and I’ve heard some great stuff about what you can find in the tide pools at Botannical Beach. A few real nice resorts on the water at Sooke or Port Renfrew, or not a super long drive from Victoria. If it’s done in a May or June the weather has a good chance of being nice and you might have to rely on a little less luck to get one of the spaces on the not huge parking lots!
The other one on the other coast of the island that I haven’t gotten to but gets a lot of buzz is Horny Island aka “Little Hawaii of Canada. ” Sounds like a bit of a two ferry gauntlet to get there, but the pictures really do look like something that belongs much further South!
