Whoever you hire make sure you aske them a few questions:
1. Do they understand the rules around secondary suites? (If they say no, this is a huge red flag, there are complex issues surrounding detached secondary units that the average uneducated contractor could wind up costing you)
2. Will they handle the permitting and inspections? (if they say no, or question this, that's a huge red flag).
3. Ask how they plan on servicing the unit. This is one of the biggest issues with secondary suites. It requires excavating your yard and potentially your street, which will require a bonded contractor.
4. Make sure you stay informed through the process, up to and after occupancy. Secondary suites require special provisions when applying for occupancy, so make sure you hire someone familiar with the process.
