Has anyone made furniture out of old pallets? I am thinking specifically about a bed frame, basically just a platform bed frame, where you just put the matress on the platform, no need for a box spring. In doing some reading, I'm not sure about the risk of chemicals and/ or bugs and/ or bacteria.

I would be hesitant to do it with anything but high quality pallets. Yes such a thing exists, but I'm not sure where you would find them. My BIL had snagged some years ago at a job site. They were made of solid oak. I'm not sure what was originally on them (yes, he asked before taking lol). The wood was lovely.  
 
We use pallets and pallet wood for lots of things, ai would have the same concerns as you. I would never bring the ones we find into the house.

I think I might be hesitant as well, chemicals, not knowing where they have been or stored (near sewage, garbage, etc).  
 
We have built several queen sized platform beds from lumber for less than $100 so don't think I would take the risk myself. (though we have used them for outdoor purposes)
