Wondering why business owners/people in charge don't eliminate the trashy "music" to which we are subjected while we're on hold. Are there really that many businesses who try to get rid of their customers & figure this is one sure way to do it? Know it's not a new problem but seems worse lately.

The music on hold has been crap for years, it's never been meant for folks to like, but most folks don't really seem to be triggered by it. Maybe put a single headphone in your ear and crank your music of choice while waiting? Seems to me if you're deciding to stop patronizing a business due to the music they use while you're on hold, it's a win for that business anyway.

I read a thing about it years ago, baucuslly the gist is  
 
1. It's better than silence, both because it reassures you that you're still on hold and it tends to make you not realize how time is passing.  
 
2. It's a generic music suitable for all sorts of businesses and applications. It's meant to be ignored. It's basically beige is beige had a sound.  
 
3. Sound quality is universally bad because phone lines and devices are optimized for voice, not music. Music recording and playback actually has really specific requirements to sound good. Voice optimization eliminates a lot of what makes music musical and suppresses a lot of what is perceived as background noise for the sake of clarity. That usually results in anything not a voice getting distorted.
