Notice re recent RVs/Campers/Trailers ads
May 21 at 1:21 PM
Hi all,
A heads up that I've been made aware of at least two instances recently of ads in the RVs/Campers/Trailers category where an item was being advertised for sale that did not belong to the person who listed it. With these ads, when a person replies to the ad they end up with a location of the trailer for viewing. In both cases the actual owner was not actually selling the trailer and was surprised to have people looking at it. Both instances look highly likely to be connected to the same ad poster who, unlike in many typical online scams, appears to have actually gone to the lengths of taking pictures of the items themselves as part of posting the ads.
While I'm not in a position to assess what's a prank and what might be something more nefarious, it's worth reminding to never send payment unless you see owner with the trailer and showing it to you and you know from the paperwork they have that they're the owner.
I've taken action on addresses associated with the poster of the ads and its very possible police will be involved as appropriate.
More broadly, whether it's buying something or renting a place it's worth reminding to never send money without seeing the owner with the item being advertised. If it's a bigger ticket item, you should verify ownership with the relevant paperwork that would go with that ownership before pursuing any further.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to report ads that might need review. Those reports are a big part of making this an environment thats as difficult as possible to use with less than good intent.
