I know a handful of teachers that are losing out on positions to people fresh out of university due to them knowing someone with the division. Is it not ridiculous after the years of experience some of them have put in that they are losing out on positions to people with little to no experience. Just wanted to get that off as I know this person that just lost out on a job because the new hire happened to know the principal. . Absolutely ridiculous if you were in this profession and know what they deal with daily you’d have a problem with this.

It's been that way in Brandon forever, regardless of what career field you look at except retail. But pretty much everything else has been that way since I moved here 19 years ago. One could be fully qualified for a position, but if the person doing the hiring has a neighbour or friend whose son/daughter needs a job, tough for you. It's fruatrating as hell, I'll agree with you on that one.

If a teacher is employed in a school division and applies for a position, but someone with less seniority is awarded the position, can they not file a grievance with their union? I know in health care, that is how it would work.

Not that we’re aware of. There’s been quite a few that have lost out on jobs with quite a bit of experience. I know staff were told that they are supposed to hire based on seniority and experience but I know some from last year that lost out to someone with a year of experience. I know someone this year with 21 years of experience just lost out on a job to someone who was on a term for their first ever year of teaching which seems ridiculous. They’ve paid their dues so why aren’t they receiving the position , you know

I got my first job in retail only because I knew someone who already worked at Superstore.

Retail will literally hire ANYONE willing to work. It's the semi skilled or skilled jobs that one needs an in for. No one is out there wondering why they can't get a retail job, but a lot of job seekers are consistantly baffled at how they get overlooked for professional or skilled professions even though they are qualified, only to find out the position went to someone with less or even no experience.

I moved to Brandon some 45 years ago and found out quickly that Brandon is clicky with a small town attitude. The problem is that people that grew up here don’t move away, they stay in Brandon. Everyone that was born and raised here, went to school together and socialized together. So when it comes to jobs in Brandon, usually someone knows someone, who knows someone to get the good jobs. I once applied for a job at Simplot which I was qualified for. I didn’t even get an interview and later found out the person that got the job was the girlfriend of a worker there. Not only are job seekers dealing with that, there is immigration that has impacted the job market, where they are getting preference in some cases.

Another hurdle for job seekers everywhere is the fact that a lot of companies decided to hire only part time staff rather than full time. It's absolutely crazy out there for jobs now.

Yes. It can definitely be very disappointing, especially as someone who’s been in the education field for years. The amount of people you see get jobs because of a family member working in the division is ridiculous. It’s definitely frustrating as an “outsider” to see people getting hired over some you’ve seen pay their dues for years.

people with no qualifications whatsoever are being hired for teaching positions....know this for a fact....  
 
then we wonder why kids are not coming out of school without any knowledge or skills...  
 
just because you need the seat filled don't hire people who aren't qualified. then once they are in an union virtually impossible to get rid of.  
 
 
I agree it does help if you know someone at a place to get hired. That is the way it has always been for centuries.  
 
And PLEASE get into Trades that is where the jobs and money are.

for women it was "old boy's club". that has reduced a bit. But still there in the shadows.
