Winnipeg, MB – Day two of the Canada Summer Games in the books. Sport Manitoba recaps everything that was Team Manitoba on Sunday.
From Headingley to Gimli and all across Winnipeg, competition was in full swing for Team Manitoba athletes on the second day of Canada Summer Games. With highs reaching 31-degrees Celsius, athletes battled intense heat along with stiff competition as Manitoba teams and individuals competed in six different outdoor sports. Both male and female basketball teams also competed, tipping off in competition for the second day in a row.
Under the hot sun, it was a perfect day on the beach courts for both Manitoba male and female beach volleyball teams. The male duo of Ben Hooker and Daniel Thiessen won in straight sets in both of their matches at Sargent Park Beach Volleyball Complex, beating New Brunswick and Newfoundland-Labrador. The twin female team of Josie and Kearley Abbott won both sets in their afternoon match against New Brunswick.
The female soccer team competed on the pitch for the first time tonight when they faced Team New Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. Team Manitoba prevailed over New Brunswick 3-2 in their opening match. Their next game is scheduled for the same time and place on Monday night against Team Nova Scotia.
On the diamond, the baseball and male softball teams each played twice today. The baseball team faced a pair of maritime opponents at Whittier Park, winning 5-2 versus Newfoundland-Labrador then taking the next game over New Brunswick, 5-0. Pitcher Jordan Lussier stood out on the mound in evening competition, holding New Brunswick to one hit and no runs. In a pair of games at John Blumberg Softball Complex, the Manitoba male softball squad lost games to both Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
Coming off an exciting come-from-behind win last night, the male basketball team returned to action tonight against Team Ontario at Duckworth Centre. Manitoba lost to their provincial rivals to the east, 99-58. Later in the evening, the female basketball team also played for the second day in a row taking on Team Saskatchewan. The female squad won 61-56 over their prairie rivals at Canada Games Sport For Life Centre.
The brand-new Bison Butte Mountain Bike Course was the site of the mountain bike cross country race today, which was also the first event to award medals at the Canada Summer Games. Team Manitoba had individuals in both male and female races. Becca Man was the top Manitoba finisher in the female race with a 13th place result. Later in the male race, cyclist Kailen Shackleton was the top Manitoban finishing in 16th spot.
The earliest competition today saw sailing begin on Lake Winnipeg. In the first day of sailing competition, Team Manitoba had male and female participants in all three sailing categories on the water, which included singlehanded laser, doublehanded 29er, and 2.4 metre paramix. Each category will see four more days of races before final standings are awarded.
As competition continues to heat up on Day Three tomorrow, Team Manitoba athletes will see action in seven different sports. Triathlon begins early in Birds Hill Park with female and male races starting in the morning. Sailing also continues in Gimli, while male softball, baseball, female soccer, and male and female beach volleyball resume action. Athletics will begin at University of Manitoba Stadium at 12:30 p.m. and continue into the evening.
