Crystal City, MB (CKLQ) – A two-hour, twenty-minute trek is what’s in store for Thomas Greenway Middle Years school kids as they travel to the Healthy Living Centre Friday afternoon.
They will be among around 1,000 kids in attendance to watch the Brandon Bobcats basketball teams take on the Saskatchewan Huskies.
BU bobcats started the School Program Initiative when the teams invited neighbouring schools to attend the national women’s volleyball championship in March 2016.
Over 1,800 students from 30 schools filled the stands for the tournament.
Last year, they continued the experiment, as they welcomed some 1,600 students for back-to-back days of afternoon action.
Thomas Greenway Middle Years is a school situated in Crystal City. The school’s basketball teams will be heading to Brandon, the furthest any school will have to travel for Friday’s games.
Principal Nathan Ramage says he wanted to showcase U Sports basketball to the students.
"I’m a big student-athlete guy, and I wanted to let kids see the lifestyle and what it’s all about." said Ramage.
The students will arrive at 11:00am, and take a one hour tour of the Brandon University campus before getting into their seats at 12:00pm, when the women’s game starts.
It won’t be the only day students will be coming the gym to watch this year.
The Bobcat volleyball teams will also get their chance to play in front of a capacity crowd on Friday, February 9. Close to 1,500 students are expected to pack the gym.
