Calgary, AB (CKLQ) – The Brandon Wheat Kings picked up their 2nd consecutive win on Sunday afternoon as they doubled up the Calgary Hitmen 6-3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Hitmen opened the scoring in the first period as Connor Chaulk snapped a wrist shot past Logan Thompson. Calgary outshot Brandon 18-11 in the opening frame.
The Wheat Kings came to life in the 2nd period. Cole Reinhardt scored 5:30 into the frame for his 3rd goal in two games. Midway through the period Schael Higson would hammer home a point shot on a 5on3 opportunity to give Brandon the 2-1 lead.
Calgary would respond with a poweplay goal of their own just 2:08 seconds later as Jakob Stukel found a loose puck in the crease and buried his 30th of the season.
However, despite the push back from the Hitmen the Wheat Kings would find the back of the net again before the period would end. Luka Burzan earned his 11th of the year on a perfect feed from Stelio Mattheos.
In the third, the two teams would exchange goals setting up a thrilling finish. With the Calgary net empty, Ty Lewis would pick up his 2nd of the night, followed up by a Ben McCartney empty netter to seal the game at 6-3.
Logan Thompson was named the game’s first star, making 45 saves while Matthew Armitage stopped 33 shots in the Calgary goal. The win was the 2nd straight for Brandon who now sit 2-1-0-0 on this four game road trip.
The Wheat Kings will finish this road trip on Tuesday night in Prince Albert. (8:00 MB on QCountry Radio.
