Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – It’s been a long ride for the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings this year, but now the team is set to start the playoffs.
The #2 seed Wheat Kings will be facing off against Westman rivals, the Southwest Cougars in the first round of the Manitoba Midget Hockey League.
With a 40-6-0-2 record, the Wheat Kings steamrolled through opponents, usually sitting in the top two spots in the league for most of the year, battling with the Winnipeg Wild.
But among Brandon’s main issues was beating lower-tier teams during the season.
The Wheat Kings first loss of the season was to the Cougars back on October 13, when they lost 3-2.
Since then they also lost to Central Plains twice, Kenora, and Yellowhead.
"Some of those losses can be attributed to the injuries we had in those games," said head coach Tyson Ramsey, "We are a healthy bunch now."
Throughout the whole season, Brandon has been destined to take on the Winnipeg Wild in the Finals, but Ramsey says the team is just taking it one step at a time.
"We need to win Game 1, before we win Game 3, and so on." said Ramsey.
The Wheaties will also be playing with two goaltenders unfamiliar with the playoff atmosphere.
Since Trent Miner left the team to go play for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, Brandon has had to rely on Keegan Watkins-McIntyre and former Crocus Plains goaltender Dawson Green.
"We are 100% confident playing in front of any goaltender we put in the net." said Ramsey.
Game 1 of the series starts on Friday at the Sportsplex at 7:30pm.
