Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – Lynden McCallum scored 6:02 into overtime to lead the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings to a 3-2 win over the Southwest Cougars, winning the best-of-five series 3-0 in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League first round.
Starting his first game of the series, Cougars goaltender Randy Cooke stopped 35 shots in regulation to give Southwest a shot at competing with the high-powered offence that the Wheat Kings have.
He stopped more five more shots in overtime until he let in a McCallum shot in the first overtime.
Southwest started the scoring after Tanner Andrew scored 10:05 in the first period.
Colin Cook for the Wheat Kings responded four minutes later to tie the game.
In the second period, the Wheaties scored first, with Rylan Thiessen putting it past Cooke.
Southwest responded at 15:18 as Leighton Holstein put it past Keegan Watkins-McIntyre.
After no goals in the third period, Brandon finished the series in overtime.
Brandon beat Southwest over the three games with a total score of 20-5.
Brandon will move on to the next round, where their next opponent is undecided at the moment.
In Winnipeg, the Bruins swept the series against Yellowhead after a 3-1 win.
Kolby Thornton stopped 36 shots in the win.
