Virden, MB (CKLQ) – The Virden Oil Capitals killed off seven penalties on route to winning Game 3 5-1 over the Winkler Flyers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
Riley McVeigh was a huge part of the dominant penalty kill, stopping 37 of Winkler’s 38 shots in the game.
The Oil Capitals got goals from Kolton Kanaski, Rylee Zimmer, Josh Belcher, Marco Creta and Kirklan Lycar.
Four of the Oil Caps goals were in the second period, putting the team in a 4-0 lead heading to the third period.
Winkler answered in the third with a goal by Weiland Parrish, but Virden responded by the end of the period with a goal themselves to win the game 5-1.
Along with an almost flawless penalty kill, Virden went 2 of 6 on the powerplay.
The Oil Capitals lead the best-of-seven series 3-0, and advance to the Finals on Thursday in Winkler.
Elsewhere in the league, Steinbach beat Winnipeg 5-3 to take a 2-1 series lead over the Blues.
