A 51-year-old Brandon man had to be retrieved by a water-rescue team after his vehicle went off a highway that had previously been closed and became surrounded by flood waters.

Around 2:30 a.m. on May 8, Brandon RCMP and fire crews were called by a driver after his vehicle went off the road and into water after hitting the ditch.

The incident was reported on Provincial Road 459 in the Grand Valley Road North area, south of the Trans-Canada Highway, said RCMP.

Emergency personnel spotted the vehicle, located just off the highway and surrounded by flood waters.

Because of fast-moving water, crews determined a water-rescue team would be needed to reach the driver.

The team was able to rescue the driver and bring him to safety. He was taken to hospital in Brandon for assessment, but was believed not to have sustained any injuries.

The truck was towed from the water.

The highway had been closed previously due to flooding and a sign was present to indicate the road closure, said RCMP.

Charges could be pending against the driver for being in the area, said officers.

RCMP are reminding drivers to obey road closures and said flooded roads pose serious safety risks.
