RCMP released details Monday on an investigation aimed at tackling drug trafficking in small Manitoba towns that led to more than 100 charges being laid.

The investigation was named "Project Develop" and led to the arrests of more than 30 people from a number of communities, including Selkirk, Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet and Steinbach.

Most of those arrested are considered street-level dealers, said RCMP.

"These guys are big dealers in training and we need to focus at some point and time on these street level guys to take them off," said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, commanding officer of RCMP D Division.

CTV News has learned the investigation focused mainly on undercover officers going into local bars, asking to buy a gram of marijuana or cocaine.

In total, officers seized $18,000 worth of cocaine, marijuana and firearms.

The mayor of Selkirk believes the drug busts will mean a difference on city streets.

"I was absolutely glowing. I felt so good this is exactly what we've been looking for," said Larry Johannson, Selkirk's mayor.

RCMP said the investigation will continue.

"Did we get everyone? No. But we will continue on here in the future and make these kind of sweeps," said Supt. Scott Kolody of the RCMP.
