A former Winnipeg doctor who faces sexual assault charges has been extradited back to the city from Greece.

Walid Ahmed Abdelhamid, 31, is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage boy twice while he slept in his bed at Children's Hospital.

He had originally been arrested in Winnipeg in June 2009 and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation, said police.

Abdelhamid, who hails originally from Libya, was later released on bail. Both police and the Crown had opposed his release, stating that Abdelhamid was a flight risk.

After he failed to appear in court in July 2009, a warrant for Abdelhamid's arrest was issued.

In August 2010, he was detained while travelling through an airport in Greece, on the strength of the warrant issued in Winnipeg.

Police said Greek and Canadian authorities worked on the extradition process to bring Abdelhamid back to Winnipeg.

Abdelhamid was returned to Winnipeg Tuesday morning and remains in police custody.

Details on a court appearance have not yet been announced.
