Some residents in the town of Souris are being forced from their homes due to renewed flood fears.

In May, the Souris area received almost 300 per cent of normal precipitation, said the province.

More than 20 homes in Souris were being evacuated Friday and others have been put on evacuation alert.

The Souris River is already over its banks because of heavy rainfall in recent weeks and more is on the way.

Town officials said another 1.18 inches (30 millimetres) is expected in upcoming days.

About 10,000 sandbags have been sent from Brandon.

For the second time this spring, Souris resident Don Kowalchuk and his wife have been told they'll have to leave their home.

"They just shut off our natural gas...sort of like a feeling (it's) another nail in the coffin," said Kowalchuk.

He's worried about his house while he's forced out.

"I have eight pumps running around my dike. If I'm told I can only come in to check them, that means we're going to be in big trouble because we've been manning, checking them every 15 minutes 24/7 since about Monday so if that's the scenario I don't know what's going to happen," said resident Don Kowalchuk.

Officials said people forced out of homes will be allowed to check on their houses three times each day.

Officials said that under a worst-case scenario, the Souris River could rise another 3.5 feet (106 centimetres), so dikes are being raised one foot (30 centimetres) above that.
