Police are still looking for a gunman after a 43-year-old grandmother was shot in broad daylight in Winnipeg's North End, shaking the neighborhood and prompting residents to call for help.

"It was just a random thing," says Ellen Murdoch, who lives on the 300 block of Charles Street where the shooting occurred. "Something has to be done. There's too much of it."

Neighbours say the victim stepped outside a home to get some fresh air when she was hit by a bullet in the buttox.

The police tactical team moved in but no weapons were found and no arrests made.

"We did search the area extensively," says Const. Jason Michalyshen with the Winnipeg Police Service. "We did interview a number of people but unfortunately we have not identified who is responsible."

Bill Yarenko says he's not surprised the gunman got away. He woke up to find dozens of officers swarming the area, searching for the suspect.

"Well they haven't caught a lot of people in the north end that have been shooting other people," says Yarenko. "Lets put it that way."

Ellen Murdoch says people in the area have been doing their part to try and clean up the streets for years and it's time city politicians do more.

Police say the major crimes unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers 786-tips (8477).
