Winnipeg police are searching for several suspects after officers found a 25-year-old man severely injured lying on the sidewalk.

At approximately 12:50 a.m. Sunday, police were patrolling the area of Salter Street and Stella Avenue when they saw a man lying on the side of the street. Winnipeg paramedics were called and rushed the man to hospital in critical condition with serious upper body injuries.

Investigators say the victim was confronted by at least three suspects and assaulted. He remains in hospital and has been upgraded to serious condition. Police say they do not believe a weapon was used in the assault.

"There is some indication that the victim and at least one of the suspects may be known to each other," said Const. Jason Michalyshen. "We're going to be exploring that possibility as the investigation unfolds."

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
