Police used a Taser to subdue a suspect with a knife early Friday morning, they say.

Officers say a man flagged down a police cruiser in the 300 block of William Avenue around 3:50 a.m. Friday. The man, 42, said he had just been confronted in his yard by a male suspect wielding a knife.

Police pursued the suspect, who was still in the area, to a residence nearby. Police say the suspect had a knife and was threatening officers. According to officials, several requests for the man to put down the knife failed and they feared for the safety of officers involved as well as nearby members of the public.

Police say they Tasered the suspect in order to take him into custody.

Dennis Robert George, 51, faces several charges, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon or causing bodily harm, say police. Officials have detained him at the provincial remand centre.
