In the NHL we have the Edmonton Oilers who just recently had the National Anthem performed in Cree and English. Some years ago the Winnipeg Jets had the anthem performed in Ojibwe.
The Chicago Blackhawks culturally appropriated that logo with a Land Acknowledgment before every NHL home game in order to sustain the Original 6 logo.
Ethan Maskwa had his last name for the Oilers in Cree Syllabics and made a ton of currency from autographed jersey sales.
The beauty of capitalism-"wealth within wealth" as it has been since the beginning of capitalism.
Other sports teams too have had to change their team names. Washington's NFL team is no longer the Washington Red Skins, controversial news headlines in the Dallas media years ago was, 'Cowboys Gun Down Red Skins.'
These may not be issues to people, but the cultural disrespect by use of appropriation is now being recovered from under the rug, it could be offensive to even non-Indigenous peoples themselves as they may be gearing towards Indigenous cultures, norms, and customs and values.
Today is Indigenous Aboriginal Veteran's Day. Tommy Prince is a name others can research up and why he would be honoured, historically enfranchisement took place to even partake in marriage, but that is still an issue today, the Government themselves are still about the first Prime Minister's goal to kill the Indian in the child.
Again, when these real Canadian historical issues arise, they are open to misinterpretation due to a lack of education, even from a non-biased perspective.
But, how can an issue go so long to not be discussed at a Brandon Wheat King game of a Land Acknowledgement and Ceremony. If the Dakota Ojibwe Sioux drum groups got together to do a round dance of the whole Westoba Place, it would be documented in the textbooks.
