Long Dreadlocks On 90% of CFL Football Players??

Is there some sort of contest with football players to see who can grow their hair the longest? It doesn't bother me, just wondering why a few years ago you didn't see one player with any hair hanging out of their helmets, now you can't read half the numbers on the field because of the hair?
Just watching the Montreal Edmonton game & there's hair flying all over the place out there, it's weird, what's the significance... if any?
