WHL Trade deadline day
1/10/2008 at 10:32 AM
Five hours to go and counting. I figured with all of the discussion that usually goes with a day like this, it'd better have its own thread.
A look at some of the sellers as I see it:
- Figren of Edmonton would look good with a few other offensive oriented players on a playoff team. Based on his performance with the Sweden juniors, he could be the highest impact player available.
- Red Deer rumours continue to float around the league. Mark Louis would fit in nicely for a contender with a 20 year old spot. Talk of goaltender Reimer being dealt somewhere won't go away. I don't personally think Brandon Sutter will be moved, but stranger things have happened.
- Saskatoon has two fairly big 20 year olds in Fiala and Durand available to a team with an open 20 spot. Don't bet on Colton Gillies going anywhere, as much as he could be a difference maker for any team in contention in this league.
- Prince Albert still has a lot of would-be-20s next year. I'd expect one or two to go to a contender today. If Devon Leblanc is half as clutch as his brother, he'd be a strong candidate. Ryan MacDonald will be 20 next year, but I'd think the price would be a bit higher as he has a better shot at being an impact player next year.
- There were some Cepek rumours out of Edmonton a week ago. I'd think Edmonton needs a defenceman back that can play this year after giving up another one off their roster yesterday for a pick.
- A big wild card is Everett. Its unclear if they're buyers or sellers. If they decide they just can't keep up with Vancouver and Spokane there's always a chance that Hamill or Irving could be moved, but the price could be *extremely* high (especially for Hamill) considering what Wishart fetched.
- I'm sure if Prince George got a decent offer for Greg Gardner (20) they'd think about trading him. I can't say I've watched him closely, but putting up almost a point-a-game in the situation the Cougars are in must say something!
- Seattle's been quite quiet so far. I can't see them completely selling things off, but perhaps a deal or two with next year in mind?
- Portland. Do have a couple of quality players in goalie Mucha and defenceman Erhardt, but with both being only 18 the price would be higher than your typical deadline selloff.
It'd be interesting to hear where people think some of the above will end up.
