Kelly McCrimmon hired by Las Vegas?

I''m not sure about this one, but according to the article below Brandon Wheat Kings owner/gm/head coach Kelly McCrimmon was hired by the new Las Vegas Nhl expansion team as an assistant GM. I'm kind of skeptical...last year it was rumoured that he was hired By the Toronto Maple leafs and it was false, even though he was considered for a position. But I guess we will find out how reliable the "source" is in the next few days.

Lol. Funny to see Dustin Byfuglien listed as a "notable" Wheat King alumni yet not mentioning Mark Stone. Buff is notable but barely an alumni. (11 games as a wheat King)

I'll just first be clear that I have zero inside information. All I can do is read and speculate like anyone else. What I will say is that:
- after rumours last year and sources that had it sounding like Toronto was going to be hiring, lesson is that nothing's true unless there's an announcement
- if this is an opportunity, it would sound like a perfect one since with Vegas not playing for another year there might be chance to more easily transition from Brandon. Who knows, maybe he could work with Nolan Patrick in Brandon next year and then draft him for Vegas in 11 months?

Time will tell, but Brandon's super lucky to have Kelly and I hope folks would be happy for him just as much as a player if he does in fact "graduate" to the next level.

as we all know, Kelly is very capable at every stage of an organization, from coaching to GM...
he's drafted and found talent everywhere, where most of my respect goes is that he's been great to local talent, Kelly's a Manitoba boy, wherever he chooses to go, will not change that...
my only concern is, who would mentor the Wheat kings?
Big shoes to fill...

A pretty lengthy discussion in the clip at the link below via the same site as the link in the original post (starts at about 24:00... Bit of a language warning if in a spot where a few f bombs wouldn't work for you). Neither dude talking references any more of a source than seen so far but fwiw both seem confident this is something that will happen (though how many in Toronto would've said the same a year ago I suppose). Interesting to note the discussion about whether a role as high as Assistant GM would be the best for initially.... Though they do say they could only find good stuff about McCrimmon when they did their homework:

that the pieces fit! I hope if it happens this close to the season, it leaves enough time to set the Wheat Kings on the proper path for this coming season. Thinking selfishly of course, as a season ticket holder! Look for an announcement when the time is right. With the rumour mill churning KM has not come out and denied or confirmed any rumours for the local fan base. We all know how quickly things can spread like wild fire in this small close knit group of fans.

Less than a month after George McPhee was hired as the first-ever general manager of the Las Vegas NHL expansion franchise, the team could be getting closer to hiring an assistant GM.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, who credited an earlier report, it looks like longtime WHL GM Kelly McCrimmon could be the man for the job.

That really shakes things up in Brandon. Does he sell the team? Team will need a new GM, Coach, Owner, Game Announcer and trainer. Wow!! A lot that will need to happen in one month....

He could always hire a GM/coach. Dale Hunter still owned the London Knights while coaching the Capitals. He put the official operations over to his brother. I could see Kelly retaining ownership but be part of Las Vegas organization (unless if it's scouting role)

Re all of the positions listed above, the team wouldn't hire a play by play guy it would be the radio station. If you believed rumours last year if the Toronto job was taken McCrimmon still would've been based out of Brandon. If the job in Vegas is assistant GM I'd have a hard time believing that same arrangement could work long term, but with the team not playing a game for a year I can't help but wonder if being based in Brandon for one more year would be an option. Maybe bring in someone to coach a la rumours of last year?

The lease was signed in May of 2012. It was a five year lease. It will run out at the end of this upcoming hockey season.

I am wondering if the Bruce Luebke situation and the Mcrimmon hiring are hand in hand.
Are they related in that Luebke is headed to Vegas also in a marketing role.

Finally a named source... This from Las Vegas newspaper's NHL writer, who cites team owner. Still won't feel right until it comes from the Wheat Kings, but if it's what it looks like couldn't be happier for a man who has earned this opportunity. Still would be a lot to be answered as far as timing and what is next for the Wheat Kings, which I imagine would be spoken to tomorrow:
Las Vegas NHL expansion team has hired Kelly McCrimmon as its assistant general manager per owner Bill Foley. Official announcement Tuesday.

Now I just hope he can hire a good coach and GM, because as much as I hate to say it, so far his track recorded with hiring good coaches isn't that good, other than Bob Lowes. But good for him, he deserves it! And will do great in the NHL.

Wheat Kings are holding a press conference at 4pm where I imagine things will become a lot clearer. Will be there and will update if it's related to this topic as expected. Not sure on what Vegas' plans are as far as announcing anything before that time (they'll just be waking up there)

I heard that that rumour was not true, which makes sense. I would think KM would not sell the team, at least not for a while. If he can keep ownership and work in the NHL, why wouldn't he do both?

It's possible, but people have been saying Jared's buying the Wheat Kings for years now. But we will find out soon enough.

In a nutshell the job with Las Vegas has been taken. McCrimmon will stay as owner of the Wheat Kings, with the process being underway regarding now vacant head coach and GM roles with the team.

Couple of points of interest from yesterday....

Wheat Kings will be holding a press conference tomorrow where they will be making whats referred to as "several announcements." With training camp less than a couple weeks away, safe to assume there's a good chance that coach and GM could be among what's talked about.

Also saw that Spokane Chiefs' GM Tim Speltz will be moving on to take a job with the Maple Leafs.
