Did you contact the store? You sound like you’re accusing someone of stealing the bottle that you left in the cart...lol

Why not just buy another one?

All you had to say was "I was at Sobeys (should likely say which one) and I forgot my water bottle in a shopping cart. If someone happens to find it could you please take it in to customer service."  
 
No need to accuse people of keeping it. Unfortunately some people aren't nice and keep things that don''t belong to them but there is nothing we can do about that.  
 
And for the record you were the one that left it behind, so next time make sure to take your stuff and no one will steal it.

If I found a water bottle anywhere I would leave it there. Why would I keep someone else's water bottle? Yuck.  
 
Definitely agree the OP did not have a friendly tone-it was very accusing.  
 
Perhaps check the trash bins? Someone might have tossed it in there?

Water bottle worth that kind of money is gone,its no different than a glass or cup, throw it in the dish washer and its good to go. somebody got a 40 buck water bottle for free, your dreaming if you think the person that found it is going to give it back.

IMO, even touching a used water bottle is nasty. Forget about washing it or putting it in the dishwasher and for someone to re-use it, its just plain nasty.

K people born with silver spoons in there mouths. Trust me if your not going to trust your own bloody dishwasher to sanitize a perfectly good water bottle. I’d hope you never leave the house again. The millions of mouths and unwashed hands that have been on your glass’s in restaurants before and even after would astonish you. Not to mention people not washing there hands in the bathroom.. How many private parts have touched every handle on every door in the entire city. How many sneezes on every hand toucning every coffee cup/ handle/ door / menu / place matt. We have turned into such a bubble wrapped Society. Well guess what a lot of us ate worms. We shared glass’s and oh my god we never got the shot , here we are today and I rarely get sick. Anyway your water bottle is likely gone . And Because of this thread and these peoples attitudes imma take every damn water bottle i find. Might event quit my job to do it full time. Lol. A cup at the cafe I know has been used only in the cafe for whatever beverage and I feel fairly sure it has been washed in a commercial dishwasher after every use. A water bottle in a cart? Who knows what has been in it or when it was last washed. No thank you, not something I would pick up and take home. Might toss it in the trash bin if that were the last cart otherwise i would leave it there and take a different cart. I wouldn't figure it worth my time to walk it over to customer service. I agree should check the garbage container.

I thought the OP was respectful in asking a possible random person in finding and asking for someone to return it.  
 
From what I gather, it''s not a cheapo water bottle and the OP made a reasonable request.

Clean it it can be reused, you said glasses and cups get cleaned in a restaurant so your ok using them, but you admit sometimes they don't right, how close do you check you cant always see contaminates, so why would a water bottle you washed and inspected your self be trash without question, personally I would drop it on the service desk in case the owner came back, for it who seems willing to use it again probably after a thorough cleaning because who knows what it been up to while not in their possession its not trash recyclable probably but you want an argument I do that's why I commented in the first place just being honest have atter what next?

Was there ever any doubt? not many would recognize the value there, but somebody probably did and wasnt the turning in type, now has an expensive water bottle, by some of the peoples thinking here the previous owner shouldnt want it back because who knows what was done to it or put in it while not in their possession, and it can never be usable again. but most who would take it would just give it a rinse and use it even if it was full of goat piss.
