Old Computer help

I want to sell an old computer that I have had laying around since I got my new one. Problem is, I dont know how to permantly delete everything. I have heard that just sending it to the recycle bin or trash ( or whatever it is)doesnt actually get rid of everything from the system. I dont want to sell it and have some stranger be able to look up my old files.TIA
