HP LAPTOP ISSUE

So my fiance and I each bought a HP laptop back in May. Problem is is his battery no longer works, but mine does. Can you run a laptop without the battery as long as its plugged in? His doesn't seem to do that. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue.
