Information & International Boarders

Hello Ebrandonites,
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about laws pertaining to information stored on servers in other country's. Namely, do Canadian privacy laws still apply even though the company's servers are in another country?
For example, for all the MTS customers who recently got your @mymts.net accounts though Windows live................are all those accounts still in Canadian jurisdiction or do they switch to that of the US because of the location of microsofts servers?
Though it may not mean much to most, I think its an interesting question since the bulk of most peoples internet activities occur on US servers. Facebook/hotmail/yahoo/google+gmail/youtube/myspace and tons of others are used daily by us and people around the world.
When it comes to ebrandon and other such sites, obviously its under canadian laws because of the location. But does this apply to all the accounts we signed up for with companys outside canada?
