Security for Netbooks?

I was wondering what kind of firewalls/virus protection/antispyware/antimalware do you use with a netbook- I keep reading about 'lighter' versions of programs, but do they really keep your surfing secure? I'm looking to use public Wi-Fi fairly often so I'm wanting to keep my stuff secure! What do you use?
