Question increasing RAM on computer

I have a HP computer, AMD 64 X2 proc.,came with 2 512MB 533MHz memory, 4 DIMM slots. I was thinking of getting 2 1GB to upgrade but Future Shop salesperson told me 1 2GB would perform better. Got a 2GB 800/667/533 MHz. Now I'm wondering can or should I leave the 512's in or just use the 2GB alone? If I keep the 512's is it better to put the 2GB in the 1st slot & move 1 512 to #3 or just put the 2GB in #3? Thanks ! (1st post,hope it comes out right)
