Getting router to work

Using westman wave.I can get the internet to work with the cable modem plugged right into the computer But when I go to set up my router it doesn't work. I can access it thru the 192.168.1.1 and set it to obtain IP automatically but it still doesn't get any connection. I even went through a program on linksys that helps you set it up and it couldn't get an internet connection. Using an SMC modem from westman who are, btw, no help. This worked before with mts dsl. Yes, I have reset and power cycled. I did EVERYTHING. Anyone able to help me?? Thanks
