Computers drive me nuts - more problems

I needed badly to play music last night.
For some reason the volume icon had disappeared...and yes the speakers are plugged in!
Our computer setting for volume and audio say the hardware must be installed and when you try to install it, it says no device was detected.
Seems no way no how can I get sound, no matter which settings we try.
