I got brave and replaced my PS4 hard drive with a much bigger one all on my own. The PS4 works fine. I am not super tech savvy but I am unafraid with good guidance.  
 
Now I have the 500 gig hard drive I have put in a casing and am struggling to format it. The drive is not recognizable in my computer but I can see it under disc management.  
 
I have been following this site:

I find it under device management and drivers are up to date. "Change driver letters" is darkened out so I cannot do that either.

And I could not delete partitions (there are several all healthy) because "the rpc server is unavailable"????  
 
I think I am getting in over my head. Any suggestions cuz my frustration level is escalating. Lol

I run windows 10 not 7 like the link shows. Not sure if that is an issue.

You can get programs online that can do it. You tell them which drive to format and which format you want it in, the computer probably won't recognize the drive as it's a format outside of windows capabilities.

The RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service in Services should be started and the startup type should be set to Automatic.  
 
a) Click Start, type services in the start search box and press Enter.  
b) In the Services window, find Remote Procedure Call and right click on it to select Properties.  
c) Under the General tab make sure the Startup type is Automatic and the Service status says Started.  
 
Do this first, if that fails to help then from what I've read online it could be corrupted profile, bad files in the core of windows or even bad bios settings have caused similar for other users

Goodtimes: Under devices the drive does not show up at all. Would the program I download still be able to find ?  
 
Singlepoppa: I will try that next if the other suggestion does not work. It is good to know others have had the same issue and I am not a complete idiot.

both of you guys said and guess what??? It worked!!!! With both of your suggestions I got it all sorted out.  
 
"Under the General tab make sure the Startup type is Automatic and the Service status says Started." I did this and then immediately there were lots more options and less things darkened out.  
 
After that was done, I had to do this:

I've got an external hard drive, as a gift from a friend. I've been hoping to plug it into my ps3 and use it to stream movies I've uploaded to the HD.  
 
The ps3 (slim edition) doesn't recognize it in any of the settings. Is this a similar type thing, where I'd want to go into the devices property menu and select the automatic startup type?

it is in the right format, the ps3 may not even recognize it.  
 
With the help of the 2 awesome guys here I got mine eventually formatted to fat32 format. I put movies and music on mine (the external hard drive) which I can play through ps4's media player.

FAT32 for the PS4 to see. It's real slow and old format but it works great. Any movie downloaded after some time in 2013 will have a audio "watermark" and the audio will be muted 20 min in, unless it's a cam version.  
 
Don't illegally download movies and you'll be fine.
