We have 2 Roku boxes and 2 Roku tvs. We purchased our own, fairly big, internet modum to support all of our devices. In the end it is soooo much cheaper than satellite or cable. It provides us with what we need...YouTube, NetFlix, Vikki, Crackle and a few other options we haven't checked out yet.  
I'm not sure if it will give you what you want. I'd highly recommend checking it out, though.

Yes. You could get something like this for $45 from Amazon.  
or something with 2gb of ram and 16gb of storage for around $60. Whatever you do, if buying from Amazon, make sure it is fufilled by Amazon as you will get it delivered in days instead of months from China and you can return it if it doesn't work. Also get something with Android 6.0 or at least 5.1 and not the cheaper boxes that have the old 4.4 operating system.Also some have AV & HDMI outputs for older TVs and some just have HDMI.

Also have a streaming box and love it. No regrets getting rid of cable. We watched the Super Bowl on it (excellent quality). The only thing we haven't been able to find on it was the live awards shows like the oscars and Grammys.

Can you watch shows on channels like TLC as they are playing? I love my PvZ and watch a lot of shows from different channels and wondering if this will do the same thing. Are there certain shows you can't watch on this?

I have a roku hooked up in a room in my house and it works great and I have tried to hook one up at my main tv but it always says unable to connect. I've tried a couple now just in case one was broken from the manufacturer but the same thing, unable to connect! Both units are the same distance from the modem with no obstructions. Do you think I need a stronger modem? Thanks

My take on this is that these Roku and Android boxed won't replace your cable or Satellite TV completely. If you are just looking to watch movies, sure, but not for TV channels.  
If you still want to try, my suggestion is not to cut your Satellite TV subs:cription yet. Try our those streaming boxes first.

There are services that you can get for a streaming box that you pay monthly for and you can get live TV channels for most major networks. Likely still cheaper than a satellite bill.

All streaming boxes are marketed in terms of that 'grey area' of piracy.  
 
Just to offer a recommendation, the Mag254 IPTV box is fantastic. Comes with the ability to sign up for free (legal) IPTV providers which you can find doing a quick Google search.  
 
There's also an underbelly scene for that specific box, but for the reasons Adam has outlined above, I won't get in to them.

What do you have for internet service? Since you have satellite TV, it sounds like you live out of town. Hopefully your internet speed and data cap (if you have one) will be enough to support streaming.

Android Boxes with Kodi are your best bet for on-demand streaming. Live streaming works best with a paid for IPTV provider. They give you access to 3000+ channels, but only about 300 are english. IPTV can be set up in Kodi. If you stream with out a paid for provider my experience is a very unreliable connection.

People that are looking for "free live TV" will never have a reliable IPTV.

You're kidding right? Having satellite TV doesn't mean you have to live outside of town. Lots of people in town have satellite TV.
