I am not a fan of the Liberals. We all know politicians sometimes over promise.  
 
In this case the Liberals listened and slowed the intake down. I am okay with them adapting due to the events that happened in Paris. Sometimes we should expect the Government of any political stripe to be flexible or adapt to reality.  
 
What I am not happy with is since this was a election platform item Justin should have made the announcement.  
 
I also am not happy that they are mixing in the 10,000 private sponsored ones in the announcement.  
 
In short the promise was 25,000 government sponsored by Jan 1. Now it is 10,000 plus another 15,000. Yet 10,000 of those are private. Slight of hand if you ask me. The promised 25,000 Government sponsored ones will in total only be done by the end of 2016. Pretty much a year late. The Liberal here are taking credit for privately sponsored ones in my opinion. 35,000 all together.

I know a guy who was in Germany and surrounding countries in September, and the refugees are as bad as you hear in the media. They were VERY demanding!! They did not want to follow any laws, regulations or anyone.

I remember watching the news footage of the refugees trying to kick and push down the fences and barricades, while shouting and demanding to be allowed in to some European country, possibly Hungary. I remember thinking that if a young woman came to my door with a small child, asking for my help, I would be much more likely to open my door than if a bunch of angry, threatening males were trying to kick my door open while yelling at me, demanding that I let them in my home. How about you? Who would you be more likely to let in to your home?

Two whole months more to screen and vet 25,000 refugee claimants from countries where documentation is almost non-existant. Well, now I'm thoroughly convinced that we have absolutely nothing to be concerned about, especially after watching the video with the MP from University-Rosedale. I'm confident that our country is in very good hands with the new Liberal government. I also have a tendency to be very sarcastic at times.

Really it didn't matter about who was or is Prime minister, we were going to get Syrian refugees one way or another, maybe numbers may have been different but in the long run we likely would have ended up with somewhere near the same number.  
 
The reason I ask if they have won has to do with the idea of terrorist, a terrorist sometimes has to do nothing to be a terrorist, the idea of the danger and cost of this has been presented not only on here but on all social media, and according to some polls 54% of Canadians are now unsure. Because of the ideas presented it's my belief that we are going to have a group of people that will not be accepted by our society, which means likely few will get jobs and have to remain on social programs for a long time.  
 
Remember, they were coming regardless of who was in power, but it was the effort of Canadian citizens that may have created a real problem.  
 
Well done folks, well done. Maybe ISIL hasn't won, but we have certainly helped their cause of spreading terrorism.

Just wondering if anyone is aware whether there is an organization in town or within Westman that will be collecting donations for clothing/blankets/household goods towards the settlement of the refugees?  
 
I haven't seen/heard anything yet but may have missed it - I'm hoping someone may be aware of a local organization/community group in Westman who's plan is to assist in the positive and healthful transition for the refugees.

We need to screen for "economic migrants" and say no to them.  
 
There have been people on waiting lists for years trying to get in to Canada, why should we be letting these people skip the que because there is a valid international crisis that may or may not have anything to do with them.  
 
This kind of situation has been happening too often - this is an older story, but I have read a few more recent stories about people turning their noses up at accommodations.

Seems to me people who are truly scared and truly needy will take anything they can get and work to make it their own.

are many migrants who are from many other countries than Syria. Africa, India, Somolia and others were mentioned in a few of the videos I saw. And they wanted to go to Germany and only Germany. They want their own homes as soon as they get there, get welfare.

I am torn between thanking common sense and bitching about a broken promise.  
 
I think I'll choose to see this as a positive and stay tuned. Damn it is tough not to use this in a partisan way.

with Doug that while I'm not a fan of the liberals I do respect that they have pushed back the promised date of these refugees entering our country. But as far as them coming at all I will post a story explaining why I'm against it.  
 
My friend has a cat. The sweetest, cutest looking thing. She will rub against strangers legs and look innocently up at you. She meows sweetly and is very friendly. So much so that you cant resist in picking her up. But when you do, she will hiss and bite you. The moral is that just because someone seems to be one way, does not mean that they don't have the core beliefs of who they are. And we know that Muslims are taught that woman are below men. So right there I don't need to go any further because I'm not interested in anyone here that believes that or will be teaching that to his children!

And there it is! The typical liberal and general left-wing view that it's our fault. If they do become terrorists, it's our fault. If they don't succeed once here, it's our fault. Not just on this topic, but everything else too. No matter what bad things happen in the world, somehow it's always our fault. Typical liberal, left-wing viewpoint. We are always the problem.

I've voted conservative more than I've voted liberal, just not your type of conservative.

If you look at my post closely, you'll notice that I said liberal, not Liberal. Many of the Progressive Conservatives are liberals in their thinking.  
 
Liberal refers to a specific political party while liberal is a term used to describe a political ideology that also includes NDP, Green and, sadly, quite a few PCs. Personally, I prefer the CPOC over the PCs.

side with Don on this one. I too was a long time Conservative, that was until Harper's new version of Conservative came along a decade ago.  
 
This anti-democracy, anti-Muslim, spreading of fear with a terrorist behind every bush is absolutely shameful.  
 
Many on ebrandon and a lot of westman could learn an awful lot by looking at a small community of less than 4500 people down the road called Altona.  
 
The community is abuzz with getting ready to receive 45 refugees that will increase their town's population by 1%  
 
Do you realize also that they are a strong Conservative voting region but obviously must believe also in a different type of Conservative.

The Altona refugees that came in under conservative times.  
 
The ones that cost tax payers 20k for a family of four.  
 
Compared to Liberal refugees at just under 200k per family.  
 
Long story short, I hope the Liberals can get their heads out of the clouds, starting by doing more with the same or less tax based refugee money.  
 
Personally, I hope they can serve more refugee needs with their new plan.  
 
 
I also kinda hope they can start catering to the needs of our country.

Can't really be sure, but I have not heard when our fair city is deciding to sponsor some folks from Syria. I know there are private initiatives, but why do we not hear about the city? C'mon Mr. Mayor put your dibs in to get some here to Brandon.

market is already tight, Manitoba Housing has long waiting lists. Do you figure the city should also buy them homes to house them?  
 
This is something the city itself should stay out of!! And the mayor will have to discuss it with taxpayers first. If a Brandon resident want's to sponsor a family, so be it. Then they will have to take care of the family.

Ignoring the obvious  
A. The refugees should be sponsored to come here because we have low unemployment and they'll are sorely needed. Just think of all the doctors that head back to Toronto once they get their licence validated over there.  
B. We can afford it. Easily!

Having a "path to citizenship" is the key. You may like to have more labour come to Brandon to support your rich lifestyle through the Temporary foreign worker program. But, those days are over. We'll still need to keep Brandon growing and if we don't get these folks from the ME then we'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel sooner rather than later or we'll be paying a lot more than we will by getting the refugees at virtually no cost.

So you are looking at this as what is good for supporting rich lifestyles and what is best for the labour market in Brandon and not at the humanitarian reasons to why this is happening?...and also out of curosity.. who in your opinion is "the bottom of the barrel"?

When the lifeblood of Brandon is large scale industry that competes globally, do you think we can afford to sit and wait for the workforce to come to us? Brandon will have to compete that resource just like any other resource, no? Yes, I think we should help the ME and those that are in need. No reason that it can't go hand in hand, no? Hence the mayor is stuck in some nostalgic wheat city past that does no longer apply.

your saying to get them here and immediately and put them in places like Koch, Canexus, and Behlen? It's not up to the Mayor to provide a workforce for those companies. And I don't think those companies are 'scraping the bottom of the barrel' for employees

"Mr. Mayor" has talked a lot about bringing refugees to Brandon and has stated the city will do what they can to accommodate Syrian refugees. I listen to CKLQ and read the Brandon Sun everyday to get information you should follow the news so you can see what our "Mr. Mayor" has been saying!

There are 36 cities welcoming this influx of refugees. It's not to say they won't end up trickling out to some of the smaller centres, but this article lays it out.
