is the one making all the decisions? IF you read the paper today, the article states that it is the province that wants the refugees to be housed in Winnipeg for the time being so they can access different service that they need.  
 
It also states that the city, namely Trudel, is working with the province to be ready if and when refugees can be housed here in Brandon.  
 
Also 2 churches in Brandon are working privately to sponsor refugees. Maybe contact either Know Untied or Richmond Park if you personally are interested in sponsoring a family yourself?

Probably housing would be one of the biggest obstacles, as we have been hearing for years about the extremely low vacancy rate in Brandon.  
When people already living here are struggling to find a roof over their heads, why on earth would you expect the city to make the situation worse?  

don't think any of those cities listed are sponsoring any refugees themselves, but have said they will host the federal government sponsored refugees.

My understanding is that the government will be sponsoring 15,000 of the 25,000. The other 10,000 are being sponsored by private organizations...churches, families, NPO's...I don't know that any cities have undertaken the sponsorship on behalf of their citizens though.

Ignore the rental market and how tight that is.  
 
Having said that the City will do its part. The tax base already and with good reason supports immigrants in many shapes and forms.  
 
Be it English as a second language in schools etc. We have the feds and provinces kicking in coin.  
 
We have many private sponsors. The city has what it needs to help out those that come. We will adapt. In no way shape or form should the city step into and take on Federal responsibilities.  
 
The Province has. Fine. The mayor needs to say squat. What we have in place is okay. Housing less so but man it is tough on us all that way.

So here is everyone bleeding hearts over people who don't want to stay and help defend their country. Look at Canada, a health system that is overtaxed right now, a welfare system that is in need of overhaul and people living on the streets including persons with disabilities but I don't hear of anyone giving them a hand up or hand out. Why don't everyone look at home before looking elsewhere to lend a hand. Also look at out taxes which will be hiked up to help pay to feed, house and supply all the refugees with other requirements and they will also most likely receive a financial supplement so who will be paying "TAXPAYERS". If Canada was under attack I wouldn't not run but stay and defend this great Country.

Apparently Trudeau is doing 10 million dollars worth of renos on his new residence, on the Taxpayers dime. So, while he is doing that and bringing in refugees, on the Taxpayers dime, again, he is ignoring our own Canadians in need of help. There are lots of other places the refugees can go. The US is currently tracking 48? ISIS in their own country. Canada is bringing in families, less some of the fighting age males, who decided to stay and fight WITH and not against ISIS, and yet Canada is bringing in their families. What the hell is wrong with this picture? ISIS has clearly stated that they are inserting ISIS within the refugees. Syria didn't even know who was in their own country, so how the hell is CSIS going to know who's who?  
 
Canada should start taking care of it's own first:  
 
1- Our children, because 1 in 5 children in Canada lives in poverty.  
2- Our seniors, who most can't afford basic necessities, which includes food, shelter and much needed medication  
3- shelter to the homeless  
4- better care for veterans who fought to keep the scum terrorists from moving to Canada  
5- Sort out the displaced First Nations who are still trying to get their own shelter  
6- Give free dental to children under 18 and adults over 60.  
7- Feed our starving population  
 
And the list goes on and on....  
 
If Canada and it's population is SO CARING, then why do we still have people starving to death and dying without food, shelter or medication?

there is no running water at Shoal Lake.

You make some good points about the issues that would argue against getting Syrians to Brandon. However, we assume that the education is superior that the Syrians have compared to the folks from Shoal Lake, don't you understand that Bowman is chomping at the bit to bring them in? Why do you think that the Syrians are so highly educated? Can you explain why you think the Syrians are "prime potential settlers", are they doctors and nurses or some other professional?

The federal government announced last year that it would spend $323 million over the next two years to improve water and wastewater services on Canadian reserves, can't get fixed overnight, but something is being done about it.  
 
People move all around this country all the time, leaving their friends and family and "home" behind in persuit of opportunity, higher quality of living, or just a change in scenery. Even myself, Brandon is over 2000km from where I was born and grew up, no big deal, if need be I'll move on again.  
So I have difficulty having sympathy for people who choose to live a stagnant life, in dependence on the government, and then complain about their living conditions, especially when there's opportunity all around them in this country.

Shoal Lake was in the news a few months ago, the Feds turned them down and want to do a study first, Winnipeg was on board and so was the province to give money but not the Feds.  
 
How can so many people just pull up stakes and move to somewhere like Brandon? We have a shortage of affordable housing don't we? If you think of a Native living on a reserve who owns their home and then think they should move elsewhere, there would be rent and other bill to pay. If they were so lucky to buy their own house, doubt that, So most people have to do with what they can afford to and live accordingly.

The government of Canada is doing the renos to 24 Sussex Drive NOT Trudeau. It is The Prime Minister's residence - where Harper, Martin, Cretien, Mulroney, etc.. lived and were too arrogant to move out so they could do the renos then...

The bringing in of refugees is crucial to the way Canada is going to proceed under the new regime. Unfortunately, our local leaders haven't caught on to the reality for whatever reason.

why you think that our Mayor, whose name is Rick Chrest btw, doesn't or isn't willing to let refugees settle in Brandon.

I think it would be a foolish thing to offer to bring a group of refugees to a city where housing is as tight as it is here in Brandon.  
Shelter is a top priority for these people, and a resource we in Brandon have less of than anything else.  
 
I think it would be interesting to hear from NotEdelman how he /she thinks our local government could overcome this obstacle in order to place whatever number of refugees here he thinks is appropriate.

Free-dental, is there such a thing in Canada? Even with my Blue Cross coverage I get through work, there's a $1000 limit for getting reimbursed. Is the rental market in Brandon still 0.1%?

To presume is to assume it's true with no quoted proof. It does deserve a quick look up.  
 
Depending on each situation, there are different levels of temporary health care, then it's in the hands at the Provincial level.

Obviously you have a problem with Trudeau and immigrants. I was just pointing out that your assumption the Trudeau was "doing 10 million dollars of renos to HIS residence" is wrong and that you or your parents or grandparents or someone back in the day MUST have been an immigrant - unless you are native American.  
So when you complain about immigrants (yes, refugees are ALSO immigrants) you are complaining about yourself.  
 
I am an immigrant, I was not born in Canada but I am now a Canadian citizen. I am an intelligent person so when I hear some of the bullshit people like you are trying to spread, I point it out. My bad for not wanting to promote xenophobia.
