I wanna know how a 13 year old is involved with an attempted robbery....... where is his mother?

I am guessing his parents were at home or obviously not with him. A 13yr should be allowed to go outside/around community without supervision.

So was it a robbery or shoplifting? The article says both, there's a difference robbery and shoplifting. Anyhow glad to hear two arrest were made and no injuries. Hard to say how the 13 year old got caught up in this, but he`s still young and will hopefully learn some lessons from this and get his act together.

Well maybe the mother was working? What about the father? How does a 13 year old get involved? The same way a 19 year old gets involved. They all hang out together, they could be related somehow, etc. Then someone gets a stupid idea like robbing a place, one person probably has access to a lower caliber gun as a scare, plot thickens from there. And also why wouldn't they. The thrill, excitement, adrenaline, be all bad ass. What do they get? Slap on the wrist, don't do it again speech? Please don't blame the parents unless they are the ones promoting the actions. Have you seen how we have to talk to kids now. No more swat on the behind it is a "Little Johnny....let's all sit down and talk about feelings. Mommy and daddy feel hurt and confused on why you would do a harmful thing like that." "Mommy and daddy love you lots and don't want to see you head down a wrong path of trouble." "How do you think the other person feels? They are scared and no longer trusting when others do bad things." "Little Johnny, do you understand how your actions hurt all those people around you?" Pffft......give me a break. Heck I could have used this myself at times. Some kids need a good boot camp. I would even have taken mandatory military for a couple years like other countries.

Ex of mine. Now dead because addictions killed her. Her son is FAE, fetal alcohol effect. He has zero understanding of right or wrong. His mom was an addict who had every addiction.  
 
Some children have no parents, no picket fence house, no food, no rules, no education, emotional and intellectual disabilities that society ignores.  
 
"Help is available" is the biggest lie in our society. You can get a referral to maybe get an appointment with an over worked under qualified worker who has no idea what to do.  
 
Boot camp? For a kid with an IQ of less than 90? With no capacity to learn, understand, or retain? It is like training a goldfish. It is a white society privileged white society knee jerk reaction.  
 
It does not work on those who's brain was damaged before birth.

I ask in all sincerity because I don't know. What is the answer for kids/people with FASD? Medication, counselling, prevention?? It seems that this is multi generational with no end in sight and no real answers!

I didn't realize that was the case with this robbery. Or was it? Would I put a kid with a mental disability in boot camp, no, don't know where you would have gotten that. Many of these kids know right from wrong. They know that they will get a slap on the wrist. They are pretty much untouchable. Now put them in a very structured environment and things change. You start to appreciate what you have, and show respect to those around you.

Yes some kids do. Didn't say anywhere about any with disabilities. Try going to the court house and attending one day. It is a joke there when I watch someone get in trouble they have their little clan of 6 or so giggling like it is all a big joke and court time waster. Those kids need a good boot camp. That i:ncludes my own kid.

Sounds like a minor case of shoplifting to me... The firearm was produced after the fact while trying to get away.

I hope we all realize that the firearm did nothing wrong in this case and firearms are not to blame for bad behaviour. They are a tool that can be wrongfully used, just like a baseball bat or knife or a wooden spoon even. The child is to blame and should be punished accordingly, the fact that a firearm was involved is secondary.

While i would agree that the firearm is not to blame, there has to be an increased punishment for someone who uses a gun during a crime, due to the increased likelihood of injuries or deaths. The chances of someone getting killed with a wooden spoon are pretty slim.
