There is a group in Winnipeg called the forever young club. They host a dance once a month from Sept.-June that plays only rock and roll from the 50's, 60's and 70's. We attend another of their dances last weekend and had a blast as usual. The founder of the club approached us about starting a Brandon chapter.  
 
My question is: How many people in westman would be interested in having something like that here?  
 
Their dances run from 8:00-12:00 with a luncheon around 10:30. The music is usually a live band that play only 50's-70's rock and roll.  
 
If there is enough interest we could host an event here or we can get tickets to one of their events if a few people want to just check out one of their events.

Would we have to dress up in that era? If so, I would totally be down for getting all dressed up in that time and having me some fun.

Some people get dressed for the events in Winnipeg although it isn't required. We would really like to encourage it for our chapter (I'm getting optimistic LOL). Maybe prizes , a small discount on admission,???

Prizes and discounts would likely have to wait until the club has sufficient funds. One of the goals of the club is to make the events as affordable as possible.  
 
Membership to the club is currently $15/year. This gives the club their seed money to book bands, rent halls etc... Tickets to the dances (including the free luncheon) are only $15 for non-members and $12 for members. If you do the math--If you attend 5 of the 9 dances a year your membership has paid for itself. After that you are saving $6/couple every event.  
 
I'm not trying to sell memberships at this time. I just want to give you a heads up on "How we do this" once we are up and running.

This would be great, as a swing dancer/instructor I would love to help out a little and even. My dance partner and I would even volunteer to do a bit of a class before the dance if there is interest.

Any suggestions for the luncheon? We were thinking meat/cheese, veggie platters with bread and pickles. We'd also like to support groups that could provide light meals like chili and buns or whatever to help their efforts.

Haven't heard anything on this in a few days, does this seem like something that will move forward? I'm excited for this.

I haven't "stirred the pot" for a few days to see if someone else would bring this back up. I certainly think that the feedback we've received would say

that we are going to do this. I have a few posters up around town and have spoken to a couple of venues and bands and dance instructors. I will take the list of names from the posters, personal e-mails etc.. to our meeting with the founder and representatives from the current executive at our meeting while we are in for the Halloween dance next Saturday.  
 
Once I see what kind of support they are willing to loan, we will be able to set something up. I can't afford to put on a dance out of pocket and have no one show up/ And I won't sell tickets unless there will be a good function. Please use my personal e-mail djhenry64@gmail.com to give me a more accurate figure of "how many people want to come". This will help me set the venue/luncheon/etc...

...is a meeting tonight with the founder, president and vice president. At that time I'm gong to show them how many people agree that Westman really wants something like this and how much support has already been offered to make the thing work. Then I'm gonna squeeze 'em like a grape for some monetary/technical help to get our first dance organized.

with the CEO's and president. They are very impressed with the support but as a not for profit don't have a budget to help finance our dance. We'll have to do it as a fundraiser. I'd like to do it in early/mid December and share our profits with the volunteers who drive cancer patience to and from appointments in the city. I believe that is cancer care Manitoba.

Did I say something wrong? I was hoping for some feed back before I started booking halls etc...

Might be to set a date & time for a "Start-up" dance, see how many come out to Join Up. You could start a membership list & collect dues, in order to have the necessary funds to cover any security deposit required by the hall. Once a yearly membership cost is set and announced here, people would realize that this is needed to get the group going & may be more inclined to contribute. You could also have a sign-up sheet at the door for names/contact info for people willing to help out or serve on an interim board.  
 
Any donations could be taken in a separate box at the dance, in the spirit of giving that we all enjoy this time of year. I think you first have to ensure that the basic necessities are covered (initial start-up costs, location, refreshments, etc.).  
 
I know I would be willing to pay a membership fee up front, at the first dance. (As well as help out.) Anyone else? Comments?

that is exactly what we are trying to do. I'm not looking to raise funds for any charity but the legal guy at the meeting pointed out that as a not for profit we have to account for any money left over from ticket sales and 50/50 draws etc... after we pay the bills and "seed money" for our next dance cannot be the sole recipient,apparently.  
 
It may be too soon to sell memberships ( I have to check with legal guy) but we will definitely have a list there so that we can as soon as our ducks are in a row.
