Transportation and School Alerts for Friday, February 8, 2019  
 
Brandon School Division buses will not be operating outside the City of Brandon for Friday February 8th all day due to excessive forecasted low temperatures.  
 
All Brandon School Division Schools will be open.  
Buses will be running within the City of Brandon.  
 
Attendance at schools is at parental discretion. Please Call your school if you are not going to be attending and exercise due caution.

I worry about kids waiting for buses in town at these temps!

I always find it odd that buses run in the city as well as kids still have to wait at meeting spots in the cold

I think the main concern with picking up out of town kids is if they broke down in between stops and how long it would take to get help. In town response time is so much quicker.

I can’t believe the schools in Brandon make kids go home for lunch when it’s in the -50’s, but I suppose is going to take tragedy to change policy.

There is not enough room or supervisors for every kid to stay for lunch. Arrange for your kid to be picked up to be taken home for lunch in extreme cold conditions.

This is why they say use your discretion when sending children. They don't expect big numbers on extreme cold days. If you're worried about your child walking home at lunch, either keep them home or arrange a ride.

first of all parents have the right to keep kids home if they feel the weather conditions are not safe for their child.  
 
2nd this is Manitoba, it gets cold here, life still goes on, most people still go to work and some even work outside no matter what the temperature. I work inside but walk 2 to 3 miles every night, even on the coldest nights.  
 
Parents need to teach their children how to dress properly for cold weather. It can start by playing outside for short periods of time, perferably with the parent outside with them monitoring. Keep extending the time and they will learn how to dress properly for the weather and how to deal with cold.  
 
I am not suggesting sending a grade student out on a 2 mile walk to school, bythemselves. But a parent who spends real time engagement with their child should be able to judge the if the maturitly level of their child is sufficent to tackle the cold.
