Did you look at the moon this evening?

My friend and I were on a walk around town this evening around 10 pm and we gazed up at the sky and noticed a unique figure, to which neither of us have ever seen before.
Cirrus clouds lined the sky horizontally with light breaks where the stars shinned through: until it came to the area around the moon. The moon shawn clear through the clouds and had a clear, circular ring around it, free of clouds. So, in short, it was like the typical 'moon halo' but the interior section was free of clouds. Bizarre!
I have a feeling it has to do with the lovely cold temperatures. Did you happen to look up and see it too, or know your random night-sky facts?
