my understanding if you drive on a closed road, you do not loose your insurance, etc. But if it is not safe for tow trucks, police, ambulance they will not go on a closed road to look for you.

When I was a lot younger this would not have phazed me at all to drive. But now I realize anything can happen. Too many stupid drivers trying to get somewhere for Christmas. Stay home, stay safe and you will be here to enjoy next years Christmas with family. Drive....you may not be here to spend next years Christmas with family (a little dramatic, I know). But it is not only yourself you have to watch out for, it is other drivers out there that "just have to get somewhere too."

not that snow clearing is a bad job, it's just the traffic and stupidity that you have to deal with. I've had drivers drive right up behind me in a loader clearing a driveway and gives me no room to backup.

There's a few locations that city planning and developers seem to think 'It works in California" approach to the layout of new developments. There's just no where to put the snow. 9th St south of the traffic circle for one

I was actually surprised that there were no threads on here complaining about the snow clearing after the last storm.

I am always impressed with the snow removal in my area. I live on a busy street and I am fortunate to have it cleared really quickly. It can't be easy: great work!

There sure has been a lot of hype about this big storm coming. Before social media it was no big deal we didn't have all this hype. Manitoba Doppler is showing snow coming all the way from here to B.C. but not heavy.

The title of this thread doesn't seem to coincide with the definition of Europa.

Manitobans are a hardy and resilient bunch but to me anything 10-15cm and up is enough in that short of a time frame is enough to make for at the very least a messy day and that doesn't even account for what the high winds do when thrown into the mix. I haven't seen anything that's expecting less than that for Brandon and area but have seen quite a few that talk about the chance for even more. Can you please provide a link to "Manitoba Doppler" contradicting what Environment Canada, US National Weather Service, Weather Network, John Sauder/CBC, etc are anticipating for Sunday?

I agree that giving it a name like some media seems to be doing is a little overboard but it shouldn't become a straw man that detracts from the fact we're staring a storm system in the face that looks like it will probably make travel difficult to impossible at the time of the year when folks travel the most.

For anyone looking for the most up-to-date info as of this morning, this posting from the Weather Network about an hour ago shows how everything is forecasted to evolve in terms of both snow and wind. The maps at the bottom are excellent for seeing the anticipated impact on Southwest Manitoba. From what I can tell they have Brandon in the 15-25cm zone along with an area that’s expected to see wind gusts of 60-90(!!)km/h:

The last two winters have spoiled everyone's memory of what a normal, Canadian Prairie winter is like. Yes, there are hassle's and challenges with a snow storm, there always is and always will be.
Just be thankful that La Nina didn't show up as strong as predicted, otherwise this winter could be A LOT worse.

As for naming it Europa, I think they are naming it after one of Jupiter's moons, as it's covered in ice.

Totally agree with Brenda - nobody NEEDS to get somewhere just for a Xmas dinner and it is absolute stupidity to risk your and others lives by travelling in whiteout conditions.
Not to mention the emergency workers - police, ambulance workers, tow truck personnel you are putting at risk.

Not personally a big believer in selling the worst-case scenario, but there are models out there like the one put out a few min ago below that have accumulation numbers into 40cm+ for our general area:

FWIW, as far as Brandon goes the biggest snowfall on record for Xmas day is 18cm back in 1942. The record for total snow on the ground through *all* snowfalls up to and including Christmas Day is 43cm back in 1964:

I have attached the link. You can click on the Play/pause button and it shows the cloud/snow coming. You can also slide the map along left to right to see what is going on further west but not down into the states. The legend below does not seem to indicate that we are in for a Snow Armagedon, as it is more a lighter blue color.

Also since this storm keeps saying it is a Colorado clipper maybe we will get a good dumping of snow from the U.S. I was around in 1966 when we did have a big storm and remember snow right up to the roofs on houses. So according to all of the hype that''''s what I would think it should be like again.

But as Snowman always says "I could be wrong" LOL

Regarding potential historical significance, in digging a little deeper in the records that are shown on the Brandon page by Environment Canada the highest snowfall total on record since 1941 for any day from Dec 23-29 is 18cm. So if you're reading this and have lived in Brandon, believe it or not if this storm turns out as forecasted this may be the single biggest Christmas season snow event of your lifetime.

The sky isn't falling (well I guess that's open to interpretation ), folks here are resilient and will have no doubt lived through and dug out from many major snow events but if the forecast holds this is probably going to be one you will remember.

Env Canada's forecast for Brandon is saying 5-10cm during the day and 15-25 at night..... ie 20-35 overall. Silver lining is hohoho will have had a chance to make it through before things get started.

Environment Canada's updated warning below gives full info on how things are expected to evolve throughout the day into tonight. Pasting it below along with Prairie and Arctic Storm Centre's just updated info. Assuming they will update the same link throughout the day but with it being Christmas I'm not 100% sure how frequent they'll be?

A major storm system will significantly disrupt holiday plans for all of southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan.

A Colorado low moving northeastward continues to develop and intensify. Bands of snow from this system have moved over southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba this morning. The snow will increase in intensity through the late afternoon and evening with heavy snow expected over most areas Sunday night. Computer models are indicating that generally 20 to 30 cm of snow will fall by Monday morning over most of southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan with higher amounts of 40 to 50 cm possible near the US border.

In addition to the heavy snow, strong northerly winds gusting to 60 to 70 km/h will develop tonight and persist through Monday afternoon, so the combination of the moderate to heavy snowfall and the strong winds will produce near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow over open areas Sunday night and Monday. Blizzard conditions are expected over the Red River valley and southwestern Manitoba where the winds should be the strongest. Conditions should gradually improve from west to east starting Monday afternoon as this system continues to track eastward away from the region with blowing snow and reduced visibilities persisting until the winds die down.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 4 hours.

Just made a trip into Souris and back home again, just looking at the sheltered places on both my yard and town there appears to be only about 2-3 cm. Driving condition on #2 west of Souris are not great with a lot of drifts setting up on the hiway as well as white out conditions, met a few vehicles travelling with hazards on with speeds around 60 kph.

Just had to drive across Brandon to get home. Surprised how quickly a lot of areas are already built up because of the random drifting with the wind. No clue what actual accumulation amounts are already but if there's say 2 inches that have fallen right now it's not 2 inches uniformly everywhere because of the wind... it's 4 inches in a lot of places and bare in others. Had to drive through a wide area of a half foot in our driveway to get in. Another hour tops of this and will already start seeing a lot of vehicles get stuck. If you don't have to go out please don't!

If you drive on a closed road and get in a wreck or damaged you vehicle somehow MPI will not cover you. You can also get fined for travelling on a closed highway. As for emergency services like fire, police, and ems, they will go out and find you in the case of emergency, they have to, but it will take a lot longer. Tow truck will wait until the conditions are better. I was on a volunteer fire dept for several years and every winter we had to rescue people off of closed highways and I know someone who voided their insurance because they were on a closed highway just last year. Hopefully people are thinking twice before going onto closed roads.

First street bridge almost drifted in.

It won't be long before a car will not clear the drifts on first street bridge going south.
I suggest not going on first to avoid being stuck behind the one that doesn't make it.

I've always heard people say that if you get caught on a closed road your insurance is somehow void. It's not by the way. When they close Trans Can here in Brandon if I coming off 270 or even off Grand Valley road I have no idea the highway is closed unless I checked before I left. And that's hoping MBRoads is up to date. We live on Grand Valley road my daughter went to go to work one year when the road was closed. She hit the ditch broke an axle. MPI covered. A tow truck came about 48 hours later. There was no problems getting coverage. I suppose if you were dumb enough to brag about dragging around the barricades they could deny your claim. But other then that a road closed is merely an advisement its unsafe to travel. If people really want to find a way they will. But like ya said if you hit the ditch don't expect a quick response.

Environment Canada page for Brandon saying that we had 11.4cm yesterday.
Not sure what other folks are seeing but an area in our yard that would've been very minimally effected by drifting looks to have had another 15-20cm since midnight, which would seem to have us pretty close to a foot of snow so far. Have to plow through 2 foot drifts to get out our front door. While it is still snowing, the blizzard warning that's still in effect says that the "bulk" of forecasted snow has fallen. Forecast calling for blowing/blizzard conditions to end near noon.

Our street is not driveable and I`m quite concerned about the possibility of having to attend the hospital or the doctor`s office.

a text this morning to see if I can start work at Noon and go till midnight. Hopefully my AWD Equinox will make it through. It's a mess all over Southern Manitoba.

It will be fun, used loosely, for the graders and loaders to get things cleared.

I think people need to realise any un-needed travel anywhere isn't worth it and all streets and roads are going to be unpassable.
