Hope they've been able to find enough sandbagging volunteers!

City has posted this morning's river reading. 1178.68 ft means it's come up almost a full 3 feet since yesterday morning or almost 2 feet since late yesterday afternoon. Glad they're able to provide these readings and in the big picture its small potatoes when in the middle of protecting the city from Mother Nature but part of me hopes it's possible for the day to return where they're able to put a system in place like 2011 that provided more frequent readings. Assuming it was automated since you couldn't expect a person to take time away from flood fighting efforts too often!. Once you know it's possible to be informed that often it feels like something's missing when you aren't.

At any rate the rivers high, getting higher and it sounds like they're involved in every effort to guide the water to where we'd prefer it be!

City's update for today at the link below. Expected peak within the next 24-48 hrs at as much as 1180 ft. No plans to evacuate anyone at this time. There is a reminder to respect baracades at Queen E and Dinsdale Parks, where access is prohibited. It's good that they're being proactive with this, there were some pretty scary scenes in 2011 and 2014 of people playing in some fast waters!

In 2014 at it's peak the the river was 1183.10.
It was interesting reading the posts from6 years ago on this date with more than a few people stating that they didn't think it would get as bad as predicted. If I recall correctly it was worse than first anticipated. We must remember "Mother Nature" does whatever she darn well pleases and we can predict, calculate and prepare all we want... that being said I do feel that all levels of government have stepped up and spent millions of dollars to have this city as well protected as possible. The hard working people from the city and province do an amazing job and my hat is off to them. Thank you!

Added pics from the past hour from Grand Valley along with st St.
The aqua dams have definitely bought time but to me looks like they're losing ground with cars now having to drive through water (see pic). The actual river reading taken around the same time as the pictures showed a rise of just a few inches (1179 ft compared to 1178.68) from mid-morning, though I don't imagine the strong Northeast winds have helped in lapping water up against the dam.

Is MI doing anything about the leakage on 1st Street or are we going to be without this road for months again this spring/summer? We knew how the river flowed once into Dinsdale Park from the past. I hope the dams hold otherwise someone should have thought this "solution" through more closely.

18th & Kirkaldy is a traffic disaster area at the best of times not to mention how 18th & Braecrest operates in heavy traffic. Having to funnel through everyone coming in from the north again and moving people to/from the North Hill area is going to get ridiculous again.

Tell me MI is on this issue and succeeding.

Can anyone tell me.... are aquadams the same as super sandbags? If they are totally different who made the decision to use aquadams instead of the super sandbags? Last flood it seemed like the sandbags did a good job of holding back the flood waters.

My guess is that time was the factor to resort to aquadams.

aqua dams are water filled tubes. I too would guess that time (or lack of) is th reason.they are using the aqua dams thus year. The aqua dams were very effective at keeping Hwy 110 open to truck traffic in the 2011 flood. They have also been used with great success to protect homes in various places.

is the equivalent to 10 or more supersand bags in length. But aquadams can't be stacked like supersand bags.

The aquadams can just be filled by using river water that's there, so no need to bring in truckloads of sand, then needing a loader to fill them. Aquadams are also reuseable.

Guess it also depends on the situation and how high the water will be getting for weather they use super sandbags of aquadams.

But it doesn't look like the aquadams are holding their own in this situation.

Were they used instead of super sandbags because decisions weren't made quick enough and therefore, time was a factor?

When I went through there late this afternoon, MIT had crews there pumping water and trying to renenforce the aqu dikes that have been set up.

The level of the water is well below the aqua dike.
It's "just seepage". Hope they get it dealt with!

Added a pic comparing 1st street late yesterday afternoon vs first thing this morning, A little tricky because of the reflection off of the water, but looks pretty close... folks might have their own opinion but looks to me like just slightly higher this morning?

The section of road that cars are driving through does look a little worse off (see pic) but as of a half hour ago at least was still open with morning commute traffic flowing.

This is where more frequent data would be helpful to identify when the crest has hit, at what level, etc.

Re 1st street, from the release:
"Manitoba Infrastructure has informed the City of Brandon that seepage being experienced at the site of the aqua dams placed on First Street North is being monitored by provincial staff, but there is no intention to close the road to traffic at this time."
