some model phones/devices are easier to work on than others.  
A few are so hard as to not be worthwhile, but overall is worth looking at Theres places in town who do exactly this service.  
I've fixed some of my own devices, it's always pretty tedious work and a bit dangerous for causing further damage.  
Parts(screens, glass, batteries) are usually pleasantly cheap to buy online.  
What make/model are you talking about, and is the screen still working(broken glass/digitizer), or is it worse?  
 
Ifixit guides on the internet are exceedingly helpful for learning how to deal with repairs and general disassembly of darn-near every "device" you can imagine

We were just in the same situation this week.  
Depending on your contract with your provider and who your provider is, shop around to see what incentives are out there. In our case the phone was free and clear of any "device balance" with the provider. We went from having to pay $100 for the phone we wanted plus accept about $500 in more expensive plan commitments over 2 years to only $120 in new plan commitments over 2 years and the same phone for $0. That $120 was right around what the repair cost was going to be on our broken screen.  
 
I'll probably still order a screen repair kit myself, give it a whirl and sell used if I'm able to pull it off!

For any cell phone repairs I highly recommend Cell Mechanics across from Giant Tiger. The service there is fantastic. I had cell phone issues and took it to both Bell/MTS stores in Brandon with no solution except to get a new phone! Went to Cell Mechanics and the young fellow there who is so accommodating had it repaired in 15 mins and no charge at that!
