Cellphone buying/contract signing/ and how are blackberrys involved

I bought my first cell a year ago, 2 year contract and its dying. No warrantee. The company offered to buy out the rest of the contract with no charge to me, and just buy a new phone. The guy asked me if I wanted a cell or a blackberry. Whats the dif?
Also, is this normal to have to buy a new cell phone yearly?
I have this old nokia cell from my family that is stored away, if I bring that in to wireless store, can they put into working order?
Is it a good idea to buy this extended warrantee?
I guess I'm behind the times, any advice would be superb regarding my questions, or long lasting cell tips.
