I've been scouring Google and I'm thinking the answer is "no, not in Canada", but does anyone know if such a thing as a "text only" plan exist?  
 
I keep getting hand-me-down cellphones from family, and I was thinking of activating one to us for texting as that's the best way to get a hold of a lot of people these days. As far as I can figure out, the most economical way of doing that would be to get a $15 plan from MTS & then buy a $15 text add-on that would roll with each renewal, but I was wondering if there was a better option out there?  
 
I see Rogers has a $120/year promotion right now, and it looks like it has unlimited texts (both received and sent), but I've always heard Rogers is kinda dodgy in this neck of the woods. Is that still true?

I'm with Rogers on a data/calling/text plan and it works great in Brandon. At least as well as MTS here.

I have both MTS & Rogers:  
My work phone is MTS and I find it less reliable than Rogers.  
My personal phone is Rogers. I have a talk and text plan for $40 a month. Again I find Rogers a better service than MTS.

Virgin Mobile has a prepaid text plan for $15 a month:

I loved Virgin mobile before I had switched!! That's a good one too.

What's Virgin's coverage like?

Is great in Brandon. But anywhere outside can be hit or miss. I'm in Rivers and it's all based on where I'm standing.

You can buy a sim card from 7-Eleven. No minimum fees. Get to keep your minutes roll over once a year. (You must add $25 at least once a year). Great rates, better than MTS or Rogers - Pay-As-You-Go. The only thing with 7-Eleven is if you do not have any time (money) on, you lose your number after so long (I believe 45 days) and does not work outside of Canada. I use this plan for my kids. I have the Rogers 100/ year for unlimited texting and they give you 100 minutes. I barely make calls so this is perfect for me. I love it because I get as much texting as is like. I believe they also have a 10$ plan that is 2500 texts per month and maybe 20$ for unlimited texts. These are all "add ons" not like a plan. But I''ve had them before and you just pay it per month. Usually have no problems. And the 100/ year is actually cheaper than paying the 10$/ month. I believe also Virgin has the same type of plan I think they go between 10$-20$ for texting and again it goes from like 2500 texts/month to unlimited.  
 
I've found Rogers works really well in small towns. I've had problems in the past getting service in like Minnedosa and other areas with Virgin so I switched back to Rogers. Some places is still bad service like any provider but I haven't had many problems

I did in the end go with Rogers with the $120/year plan. I have made precisely 1 call (for all of 1 minute) in the 2 months that I've had the phone, so I'm thinking it's all good for me! The unlimited texting is awesome, and service has been perfect so far including wandering into Saskatchewan.

is owned by Rogers, so I can't see them being too different in terms of service area.  
 
Besides, my $120/year works out to be only $10/month, i:ncludes unlimited Canadian texting, plus I get 50 minutes (for the year) + free evening and weekend local calling.

Well regardless who the parent company is it depends on the towers that each individual company has the pd rights to use...so fido does have better coverage. To each there own tho was just an option to the question asked that no one put out there.
