I am going to finally move up to a smart phone. my pay as you go cell phone is over 10 years old. am I better off with an I phone or Samsung or what suggestions do you have...I am not technical at all, so don't need all the bells and whistles..I am also maybe going to get a shared plan with a family member..any ideas would help..thanks

I finally got a smart phone last year, and went with a Blackberry Classic. The reason was that I do quite a bit of texting, and really like having the little physical keyboard rather than the touchscreen keyboard.

iPhones: Expensive, but high quality. Easy to use, but not very customizable.  
 
Samsungs: Can do ANYTHING. Like, it's impressive the stuff they can do. They're very customizable, though not very user friendly. If you're not good at technology, these might not work for you. Cheaper on the wallet, but also cheaply made, so they malfunction a lot.  
 
Blackberry: Best of both worlds? I've never had one... but I hear good things. Though they're not compatible with Mac computers, if that matters.

Hubby and I like our Lg G4. Takes great pics too.

I like the Nexus 5x and 6p. Also the Motorola Moto X. They are all Android phones similar to the Samsung, but with less bloat software. Samsung is not very fast at giving software updates, the Nexus phones are better at that.

I got hubby a Samsung S5 and he gets on great with it and he is the least technical person I know when it comes to phones. It is also a good size for his big hands and fingers.

What's complicated about any smartphone? Touchscreen so touch the icon of the function /app you want to use...maybe complicated cause you have lots of choice in apps...lol. Just go anything android and you will catch on quick...

i had a samsung captivate and a samsung s4 .... and to be honest i did love those phones. Honestly they are much more complicated than iphones ... im only saying this as ive had both phones.

I have an iPhone. Simple and easy and great for a non-techie. If you have other families with texting, it's very easy to communicate.

I have a Samsung 5 and i find it supper easy to use, im not that tech savvy either, my kid has an i5 and i hate it, i find it really hard to use, hard to find stuff in it ect husband has a nokia phone and while i find it a really great built phone it runs off windows like most pcs which he thought would be ok but it lacks available apps and im not a fan of how the phone is set up to use  
so my recommendation would be anything Android

I really like the Blu Phones. Very easy to use and inexpensive. Android. Order from Amazon.ca they are all unlocked, so just pop in your SIM card and away you go. My whole family run them and love them and at $125.00 how can you beat that.

I'm biased toward iphones. I find them the simplest to use and the best quality.

Best overall option: iPhone SE (Inexpensive, widely recognized, user friendly).  
 
Runner-up: Nexus 5X (OR) Moto X Play (Less expensive than iPhones, but with a slightly steeper learning curve).  
 
Top of the line: iPhone 6S (OR) Nexus 6P (Get one of these if you want to be the cool kid on the block).  
 
For work / heavy texting/e-mailing: Blackberry phones.  
 
For hipsters: Windows phones.  
 
Stay away: Any Samsung/LG phone.

I had a Moto X until it went through a load of wash.... doh!! Kids convinced me to get an I-phone and I hate it. The Moto X was way easier to learn and was more user friendly. Go with an Android in my opinion but that's just my opinion. ;)

What else are you going to be doing on this phone? My wife and I have gone back and forth from Android and IPhone. She changed back to Android (LG G4) because she HATED that she cant just drag and drop photos and music like she can on Android. the fact she had to sync with ITunes caused much stress and frustration. Both are good platforms and I am sure would fill all your needs but its the little things like that you need to keep in mind with a very closed system like Apple products.

warranty, warranty and warranty, make sure what ever you get (and they are all good) pay extra and get the monthly warranty against malfunction or loss of any kind. that includes the toilet, the pavement, or being thrown out the door in a fit of frustration. you can do all the research you want but it means squat until you understand what they are talking about.  
 
some phones are hogs on batteries, way different than your old flipper. it is the screen that sucks the battery dry so keep it on low brightness unless your outside.  
 
I got a brand new Samsung 5 after getting a warranty replacement on my 2 yr old s3  
 
the s5 is fine , I think there are better phones out there, nexes, lg, they are just not advertised as much.  
 
if you want a basic phone with out a lot of apps to run and good battery life look at the blackberry, still the best system on the market.  
 
if you looking for basic phone and your new to the smart phone world, it might be more important to get one that fits your hand nicely, not big or too small, try the keyboard for key size, does it fit your pocket or purse. big phones use big belt holders that get caught on everything. these are more of the creature comforts than the tech side as they are all good phone once you get used to them.

I have has a crap load of phones.From Apple to Samsungs and Blackberry models. Tried Sony. My next may be the one plus 3.  
 
Now I have Motorola X play . Droid in the USA.  
 
I would buy another but technology has changed since I bought it. I like trying new. I would love the Sonim XP7. Ordered one but Rogers cancelled the phone from their line up. The new Cat rugged phone looks cool.  
 
I do not use the bells and whistles on my Smart phone. I prefer large and tough.

You waited this long to get a smartphone, then I would assume (like you mentioned) that you''''re not that tech savie. It seems like most posters are just indicating what tgey prefer and not necessarily appreciating your level of knowledge on the apps and abilities that phones have today. I''''ve owned several brands of phones and the iphone has by far the most user friendly operating system. It''''s also a stable operating sytem and durable phone. Mine was bent like a ''''Bobby Hull'''' curved stick when I fell on it and still works and also submerged in water and survived that as well after a full dry off period. It''''s a no-brainer to me for those less tech savie that the iphone does not disappoint. Other operating systems may offer more flexibility in what you can do with your phone, but chances are you won''''t be the one to download hundred of "gucci" apps. You''''re probably looking for a phone that calls, texts, surfs the net and maybe even a little FB now and then. If so, then yhe iphone would be an excellent choice.

I phone is the easiest to keep it simple. I agree with 70's gut.  
 
Not a fan though of the built in battery though. I certainly am not a fan of what Apple wants for info just to start using it not even including the I cloud.  
 
No Apple store in Brandon was a issue and was the main reason

I have a Samsung Galaxy 7 awesome phone easy to use.Ihave a work iPhone 5s junk hate the phone would not ever by one they freeze up need to restart hard to edit contacts slow and worst is always having to connect to iTunes when plug into computer. The only nice thing about iPhone is Siri. The Apple maps is brutal as well.
