going to the states with pay as you go rogers

we are going to the states for about 3 weeks and have a rogers pay as you go phone. after a bit of research, I think I'm better off keeping my pay as you go down there. it is $2 a minute for calling, 75 cents outgoing text, 25 cents incoming text..we don't use the phone much even at home.just want to be able to contact the person watching the house, plus there are 2 of us travelling and we will sometimes be doing activities separately, and may need to contact each other .I've checked out roam mobility but you need to buy min. 3 months at $35.00 month, times 2 because there are 2 of us.does anyone have any experience travelling to the us with a rogers pay as you go? thanks for the help..
