Looking for a little advice...  
 
My phone plan recently expired (I am with MTS). I know that MTS will soon switch over to Bell (I'm not sure of the exact date though - does anyone know?), and plans will likely get more expensive after the switch to Bell.  
 
My question - would it be a good idea for me to sign a contract with MTS now to get the lower rates for about a year until Bell increases the costs? I use very little data and not many weekday minutes, so I would probably just use the My Plan thing and get 2 GB of data and 200 weekday minutes, so it would work out to a $55/month plan. Right now, I pay $50/month.  
 
Thanks very much in advance for any advice - I am always very unsure what to do in regards to phone contracts!

MTS has been operating by Bell (Bell MTS) since March 17. They announced several weeks ago that plans would remain the same for a year under Bell MTS. So it will get more expensive March 2018.  
 
hmm apparently you know the prices will stay the same for a year already.... So to answer you it doesn't matter. Your plan will stay the same price for a year whether its a new or existing contract.  
 
But the best advice would be to go in to or call Bell MTS and ask them directly yourself.

I was concerned with this very thing. MTS is one of the very few companies in Canada to offer the unlimited data option - Bell doesn't offer this in it's other locations. Once the plans switch and they get rid of the unlimited data (which will be inevitable) any contracts signed before the switch will be grandfathered in and you will be able to continue your unlimited data. However, most people cannot afford to purchase a phone outright and add it to their current plan and will be forced to change their plans. This is how they will get you with expensive data overage charges - especially in a province where everyone is used to not paying any attention to their data usage.  
 
My advice would be to renew it as late as you can before they change the plans - however this is a bit of a crapshoot on the when game.  
 
When I spoke to the representative at MTS/Bell he had the same fear as I did once reality set in. He said said the best bet is to hang on to your plan as long as you can with the grandfather cause.

We were in MTS last week renewing my daughter''s cell phone contract. I was told that any contracts signed before December 2017 will continue to have the unlimited internet for the remainder of their contract. And contracts signed December 2017 or after, will not have the option of unlimited internet. They advised that if that''s an issue, and you''re close to the end of your contract (Mine is up March 2018), it might be worth paying out the old contract and starting up a new one before the change gets made. Their pricing plans will change as well, but they don''t have the details of exactly how yet. Having teenagers with phones, the unlimited internet is the one that''s of main concern to me so that''s what I specifically asked about.

Has anyone heard what will happen to the Bundle savings currently given under MTS? Will this continue under Bell? What if you are one of the customers that are now under the Telus banner? Lot of questions that I am having trouble getting concrete answers for.

I was curious about the Telus thing myself. Mainly, if the customers that will be under Telus have already been informed.  
 
That is where I am going at the end of my term, always was the plan. It would just be more convenient if it were done automatically

Most service providers everywhere have these bundles, so I doubt you will lose them altogether. Whether they will be as lucrative remains to be seen however.  
 
Eg Total Internet.

to see what bell/mts does with rates in the long term. But as of right now, to say that bell is higher than mts is not quite accurate.  
 
comparing plans right now and it looks like i will save $20/mos by switching to bell right now, plus a further saving of $10.00 as I am not on contract with a perfectly good phone.  
 
not talking internet, tv or land line here just a cell phone.  
 
However I am typically only at 6 to 8 Gig of data/month but even using 15 gig it is still the same rate as mts.  
 
so best to check with your own situation and needs.  
 
now the fact that telus is going to get 100,000 of the mts cell numbers does scare me. their coverage is no where close to what Bell mts coverage is.  
 
you can thank the Competition review board for that decision to hand off your number to a company you dont want to be with.
