Got mine on Amazon. Just over $700 after tax for a 14,000 BTU dual hose portable that works great. Even self evaporates moisture! No more pails to deal with.
Dual hose isn't a necessity, but I would recommend them out of efficiency alone. My old unit (which may have been undersized for the space, I should note) would cool a bit, but never quite get it to where I'd like. If it was really hot out, it could bring it to around 26.
Part of this is likely the size of the space. But one also has to factor in the air used for cooling the condensers. Window and dual hose units do this with outside air, single-hose units have to use inside air. Which creates a bit of a Vaccum in the space, possibly drawing in even more heated air (depending on where the unit is operating). With heat being drawn both from outside AND the furnace ducts from downstairs, it's no wonder.
I also found out that my downstairs neighbour had his portable vented into the furnace duct for some time as well. If you have someone living over you . . . don't do that.
