What's with $1000 grad dresses?

I know I am about to open up a can of worms here, but seriously, what's with young women and needing/wanting $300, $500, $700, & $1000 grad dresses????? It's an important night but trust me it's not THAT important that you need to spend that much money for ONE night. Put the money towards your post-secondary education or something.
And then they wear them for one night, and some of them try and sell them on ebrandon. Who is going to buy your used grad dress? Who??!! Not me!!
