I install them but this is just my suggestion yes any house would benefit from having it in the winter anyway they don't work so great in the summer because your bringing in generally as much humidity as your taking out so if you want fresh air in the summer open a window or a air conditioner is what takes moisture out. However as far as being a old house that dosent matter what matters is how bundled up your house is new windows,insulation and poly, doors etc. That's when the Hrv came into play people were making there house to air tight and no one was getting any fresh air thus leading to people getting mold in there house and people just getting sick. So my opinion is yes your house could benefit from having one most defiantly... they do work
